Unit 33: stop motion animation

Stop motion animation is a technique used in animation where static objects are moved in increments while filming a frame per second. When played back in a sequence, it conveys the illusion of movement. Stop motion animation can be used in a variety of media uses. I will be demonstrating how they are used and giving examples of the different uses of stop motion animation.  Stop motion animation in film  Wallace and Gromit: The curse of the were rabbit (2005). The creator of the film is Nick Park. It was produced by a British clay animation company. It was made using Plasticine models and was shot one frame at a time. This took the creator hours and hours to change the movement of the models. What is persistence of vision? Persistence of vision is the illusion created by the delay of which we see images. We see an image for a fraction of second after we have seen it. As a result, we are seeing an image which is presented in front of us and the image presented in front of us a fraction of a second ago. Below is an example of persistence of vision:  As you can see in the video, the wand when still portrays lights in a line. Nothing more that LED lights lit up in a vertical line. However, when the wand moves back and forth at a certain speed we begin to an illusion of letters forming. There are two images in both thaumatrope and roller which are connected together by revealing one after another. When I roll the paper you are given the illusion of a moving image, the illusion comes from the speed in which the paper is rolled. The quicker you roll, you notice that the image on the bottom is covered by the image on top. Switching between top and bottom whilst rolling gives the illusion that the images are connected when really they are separate.  The next video is a roller with images that have a large difference:  When I roll the paper, the images do not connect in terms of movement. The images differ from each other massively which destroys the illusion of movement.  These rollers are not animation because it does not give the illusion of a static image moving, you simply see 2 different images on after each other and are confused to how the images are getting from one section of the paper to another.  Simple actions work best such as jumping and walking. This is because there are only 2 images that are being formed into a sequence....

When I spin my thaumatrope I can see a moving image. The images that I used what a stick man standing still and a stick man mid-walk. When I span the thaumatrope the images created an illusion which merged the mid-walk image with the standstill image to create a moving image. The concept is fun however due to it being the same movement over and over again it becomes boring after multiple spins.  In terms of what a thaumatrope can not do it cannot expand into other forms of movement due to the images having a limit of what can be seen when spun. However it is still animation because it creates the illusion of movement through still images. 

What is animation?  Stop motion animation is where you physically manipulate an objects movement through capturing individual frames of movement. Placing the individual frames in a sequence gives the illusion of an object moving on its own.  Different types of animation  Drawn/ cell animation:  A   cel, short for celluloid, is a transparent sheet on which objects are   drawn   or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation. Examples of cel animation would be the film Enchanted and Shrek.  Stop motion/ model animation: In  animation stop motion animation  is a cinematic process, or technique used to makes static objects appear as if they were moving.
